“Sandor G. “Alex” Ferenczy, age 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Survived by his wife Marta (nee Szoboszlay) of 66 years; son of the late Sandor & Sarolta, brother of the late Sarolta(Dr. Miklos)Egyed; Cherished father of Marta(Julius)Geday and Suzanne(Zoltan)Szabo; Loving Grandfather of Suzanne(James)Culp, Stephen(Madi)Geday, and Katalin(Jason)Magda; great-grandfather of James J. “Jimmy” Culp and Nikita Geday; admired “Batyo”/Uncle of Andrea(Nick)Longauer and the late Sarolta Egyed, and the extended Longauer, Polony, Szabo, and Taborosi families.

Sandor was born in Hungary and later fled Communist Hungary with his family during the revolution of 1956. He settled in Cleveland, where he made his living as an Engineering Designer. “Alex” earned accolades for his track & field coaching skills and was elected to the Cleveland and State of Ohio Sports Halls of Fame. He was especially proud of being chosen as USA Olympics Head Coach for Women’s Track & Field in 1968 in Mexico City, and again in 1976 in Montreal. He was a stern and loving father, dedicated in teaching his family strong morals and about their proud Hungarian heritage. He enjoyed being the center of attention, displaying his charm, wit and clownish nature at all family and social events. Dear Sandor, you will be missed by all!

Funeral Mass will be held at St. Emeric Church 1860 W. 22nd St. Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday, March 9th, at 11:00 a.m., where family will receive friends in advance at 10:00 a.m. After the service, family invites all to attend a small reception in the church basement.”
